Today, we’re diving into Joshua 7 and 8, where Israel faces its first major setback in the Promised Land—but also experiences an incredible comeback.
Joshua and the Israelites just had a huge victory at Jericho. But then, suddenly… they lose a battle they should’ve won. Why? Because of hidden sin.
This is a powerful story about how sin can bring defeat, but repentance leads to restoration and victory.
So grab your Bible, hit that like button, and let’s explore Joshua 7 and 8 together!
After Jericho, Joshua sends a small army to fight Ai, a tiny city. This should’ve been an easy win. But instead, they get crushed—losing 36 men and fleeing in defeat.
Joshua falls to the ground, crying out to God:
‘Lord, why did You bring us here just to be defeated?’
But God reveals the problem: There is sin in the camp! Someone has taken forbidden things from Jericho, and until it’s dealt with, Israel will keep losing.
This is a tough lesson: Even hidden sin has consequences.
God tells Joshua to bring forward every tribe, every family, every man.
Finally, Achan is exposed. He confesses:
‘I saw a beautiful robe, silver, and gold. I wanted them, so I took them and hid them in my tent.’
Because of one man’s sin, the entire nation suffered. And to cleanse the camp, Achan and all he owned were destroyed.
This is a hard truth, but it reminds us:
With sin removed, God tells Joshua:
‘Do not be afraid. Take the whole army and attack Ai—I have given it into your hands.’
This time, God gives them a strategy:
Unlike before, they obey God fully—and this time, they win!
As soon as Joshua gives the signal, Israel springs the trap!
But here’s what’s amazing—this wasn’t just about winning a battle.
After their victory, Joshua builds an altar and leads Israel in worship.
Instead of taking credit, he gives the glory back to God.
This reminds us: Every victory in life should lead us to worship.
After the battle, Joshua does something incredibly important:
This was a reminder: Victory comes when we stay close to God.
